The Doctor of Philosophy in Counseling and Counselor Education is a CACREP-accredited program designed to prepare graduates for academic positions and other careers in Counselor Education or Rehabilitation Counseling. Building on the entry level competencies of the master's degree in counseling or rehabilitation counseling. The doctoral program consists of approximately 96 graduate course credits beyond the baccalaureate degree, with an additional 9-15 dissertation credits.
Students must complete a minimum of 48 credits of course work (excluding dissertation) at Syracuse University. The doctoral program of study incorporates didactic and experiential learning and includes a cognate area of study involving at least nine semester credits, which are usually completed outside of the department.
In addition to meeting national accreditation standards, our program claims special expertise in five distinct areas. Students can expect unique opportunities, including conducting research, in any or all of the following:
Clinical Supervision
Developing the knowledge and skills necessary to train and supervise counselors and counselors-in-training, and to teach supervision to others.
College Mental Health Counseling
Developing the knowledge and clinical skills necessary to work within a college counseling context with students who present with a wide range of developmental and mental health concerns.
Counseling People with Disabilities
Developing the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure full participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of living.
The Future Professoriate
Developing the knowledge and skills necessary to assume academic, administrative, and professional leadership roles related to the professoriate.
Social Justice and Urban Youth
Developing the knowledge, skills, and awareness necessary to identify and confront the institutionalized forms of discrimination which continue to perpetuate disparities in social, academic, and career opportunities for urban youth.

Ph.D. in Counseling
The Ph.D. in Counseling program prepares students to work as advanced practitioners, clinical supervisors and counselor educators in clinical and academic settings. The goal of the program emphasizes student contribution to the counseling profession through research while understanding and addressing the societal changes of today's communities. OSU's program is CACREP accredited and aims to prepare graduates to be leaders and advocates for change.
This doctorate program is offered by Oregon State University's College of Education and Ecampus.
.Participants
Applicants are required to have a master's in counseling or closely related field, which can be applied to your Ph.D. total credits. Interested students must have a commitment to solving critical human problems in our increasingly diverse world.
.Collaborative cohort model
As a Ph.D. in Counseling student, you become a member of a supportive and active cohort of peers. Past participants have included working professional counselors from Oregon, Washington, California, Hawaii and Alaska. Each student is guided by a department professor or advisor throughout this three- to five-year (post-master's) doctoral degree program.
.Online/face-to-face hybrid format
The program operates as a "hybrid" program involving both face-to-face and online instruction for each course. Face-to-face classes occur only twice each quarter in a Friday through Saturday block in Wilsonville, Ore. Because the face-to-face course location is in the Portland Metro area, it is easily accessible from the Portland International Airport and surrounding regions, making it possible for out-of-state students to participate.
Counselor Education Ph.D. Program
The Ph.D. program, accredited by CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs), prepares students to work as counselor educators, clinical supervisors, and advanced practitioners in academic and clinical settings.
